A brief description
of Scientology

In the introduction of his book, Science of Survival
L. Ron Hubbard acknowledges fifty thousand years of thinking scholars without whose speculations and observations the creation and construction of Dianetics
2 would not have been possible. He gives specific credit to twenty-three philosophers of Western civilization and his instructors in atomic and molecular phenomena, mathematics and humanities at George Washington University and at Princeton.

Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life, codified and implemented into counseling procedures by the founder. Scientology offers a unique synthesis of scientific inquiry and religious philosophy, comprising traditional knowledge and modern discoveries and in utilizing most recent developments in electronics. It is based on observation, a formulation of axioms with predictable results in their technological applications; while at the same time, it gives perspective as to purpose and evaluation in respect to ethics. As a religion3 Scientology lives in the tradition of the great religions of the East, closest related in thought to Buddhism. Scientology is not dogmatic in regards to a Supreme Being, but encourages its followers to be inquisitive and to discover truth for themselves. It lays out a road and provides the tools to salvation that to a Scientologist is eternal spiritual freedom. Consequently, Scientology is non-denominational and open to everyone, independent of his or her religious background. In fact, Scientology incorporates the elements essential for a global religion that adequately serves all traits of ethnic and educational background.

1 The word Scientology is derived from the Latin word scire = to know and the Greek word logos = word, thought

Vital to an understanding of Scientology is the realization that many elements necessary to an understanding of man were not previously accurately defined. In Scientology, these elements have been precisely observed and those observations are then passed on to the student for his own verification from his own viewpoint.

A fundamental premise common to all of L. Ron Hubbard’s teachings is that a datum is only true for you if you have observed it for yourself and find it to be so.

Scientology does not rely on revelatory writings to impart understanding. Scientology is a religion of self-deliberation without reliance on exterior forces. Beyond the communication of its basic philosophy and principles, the religious scriptures are devoted to the education of its disciples to acquire the knowledge and skill to apply these principles.

In total, L. Ron Hubbard’s legacy comprises some 40 million words of recorded lectures, books and writings.
